The detail

"One of the most unique places to stay on Eco Companion combined with the chance to see Moose, Beaver and Swedish natural landscapes!"

Get back to basics, reconnect with the natural world, and learn to live in perfect harmony with Swedish wildlife at the wonderful Kolarbyn Ecolodge. Ideal for friends, couples or families looking for a ‘different ‘kind of holiday, this four-day adventure gives you the chance to discover the hidden secrets of the forest, as you learn to live at one with nature. There’ll be plenty of time for you to get out and about to explore on your own, but you’ll also be accompanied by professional wildlife guides as you head out on evening excursions in search of wild moose and beavers. This is the perfect chance to learn more about the nature that surrounds you, so be sure to ask plenty of questions!

During the daytime, you can canoe across a serene and silent lake, hike through magical woodlands, collect berries and mushrooms or enjoy a refreshing wild swim. Staying in your own private forest cabin, you’ll enjoy a comforting and cosy woodland retreat to return to after a day of exploration and adventure! You’ll be entirely self-sufficient, preparing your own meals using wholesome ingredients, chopping firewood and then cooking over an open fire. As night falls and stars fill the sky, sit around the softly crackling campfire and feel yourself truly connected to the nature that surrounds you.

For over a decade, WildSweden has been giving travellers from all over the world the chance to observe some of Sweden’s most iconic wild animals in their natural environment. The company strives to offer genuine ecotourism experiences that both promote conservation efforts and support local economies; in a country where certain species are sometimes worth more dead than they are alive, and where human-wildlife conflicts are a big issue, WildSweden proves that nature tourism can add value to local communities, and that humans and wild animals can learn to live harmoniously.

The ‘return of the wolves’, for instance, is a hot topic in Sweden at the moment. The company’s guides work to track and monitor a number of wolf packs, with their findings and observations making an important contribution to the Scandinavian Wolf Project, which aims to ‘provide a factual basis for the optimum management of wolves’. There are many human-wildlife conflicts that need to be solved, and WildSweden aim to be a part of these solutions, and to also enrich their travellers’ understanding of and respect for wild animals and nature. In recognition of its work in the field of ecotourism, WildSweden has been approved by the Swedish quality label for ecotourism, ‘Nature’s Best’, since 2005, and was also named the country’s best ecotourism organiser in the 2009 Grand Travel Awards. What’s more, WildSweden was named ‘Tourism Company of the Year in Sweden’ in 2015!

Day 1

Upon your arrival at Kolarbyn Ecolodge, you’ll meet your host for an afternoon introduction. Once you’ve settled into your own private forest cabin you’re sure to feel right at home! Don’t get too comfortable though – there’s adventure to be had outside! Make your way down to the lake, where a Canadian-style canoe awaits you. You’ll be provided with a waterproof map of Lake Skärsjön, with some particular highlights marked out. Then it’s up to you to explore the lake and surrounding forest for yourself! If you’d rather not canoe, you can always choose to go hiking or swimming instead, or simply rest and relax around the campfire. As night falls, snuggle down into your sleeping bag and drift off to sleep in your own forest hut.

Day 2

Wake naturally, and step right out into the forest. After you’ve prepared and eaten breakfast, set out into the forest to explore. Go for a hike in the woods or a wild swim, relax on the sandy beach, go birdwatching, or set out to pick berries, mushrooms and edible plants. After lunch cooked over an open fire, you’ll set out on an evening Beaver Safari. Once you’ve arrived at the nearby lake, your guide will introduce you to beavers and give you some tips on how to increase your chances of spotting some. You’ll take a short walk to learn about their habitats, and about how these industrious animals work to cut down trees. After an outdoor meal, you’ll set out in a rubber boat to cruise silently around the lake in search of beavers and other wildlife, returning to Kolarbyn late in the evening.

Day 3

Another action-packed day of forest adventure awaits! In the late afternoon, you’ll be met by a guide who will take you on a Moose Safari. Travel by van to a part of the forest renowned as an excellent place for moose-watching. Since 2003, every tour has successfully found moose! The safari lasts for around five hours, and you’ll return to Kolarbyn late at night.

Day 4

Enjoy one final breakfast amongst the trees, and soak up the peaceful atmosphere. Stay as long as you want, and leave in your own time. If you’d like, it’s possible to extend your adventure with a Wolf Howling Tour – however, this is only possible on selected Thursdays during July-September. The tour is incredibly popular and will fill up fast, so be sure to book well in advance!
