The detail

"Hidden away above Lake Malawi is Kaya Mawa, here is your chance to explore this picturesque destination before the mass tourist!"

A supernatural vibe makes Kaya Mawa like nowhere else on earth. Visit this spectacular destination hidden away on Likoma Island in Lake Malawi where you will be embraced by the warmth and hospitality of the enchanting Malawian staff. Find yourself showering under the stars, or taking a midnight dip in your private pool. At Kaya Mawa you will enjoy timeless luxury and only the best of modern conveniences. Here, each one of the eleven rooms is unique, from secret decks for some time in the sun, to secluded chalets with stunning views of the nearby lake.

If you fancy a change from all the relaxation, you can fill your days with everything from stand-up-paddle boarding, kayaking, kitesurfing, waterskiing, sailing and quad-biking; plus, a full PADI dive school. Lake Malawi, which surrounds the lodge, is home to over 1,000 species of fish, and for bird-watchers there are a whole host of species to spot including African fish eagles, kingfishers and colonies of White-breasted cormorants. Another highlight includes St Peter’s Cathedral- the third largest cathedral in Central Africa! In the evenings there is plenty of time to enjoy 5-star chef Richard Greenhall’s delightful menu, or perhaps a massage at the spa? "Kaya Mawa" translates as "Maybe Tomorrow" - an idea that encapsulates the island life you will enjoy during your time here.

Finding itself on a beautiful island filled with the people who personify the warm heart of Africa, the Kaya Mawa Lodge has the local community at its heart, and is constantly striving to limit negative impact on the environment and engage in multiple community uplifting projects. With a lack of essential resources such as water for crops, community support, access to advantageous learning opportunities as well as HIV/AIDS education, Kaya Mawa has set up numerous projects to help; including planting 1500 trees, organizing HIV / AIDS awareness drives including testing and support, building and filling a community library, as well as building water tanks and laying the piping system that supplies two villages and roughly 2,000 people with running water.

An incredible example of Kaya Mawa’s projects is the Katundu Textiles, which is a workshop set up on the island to empower single mothers by providing employment to local ophan carers and single mothers who would otherwise struggle for an income. Furthermore, 100% the workforce is local and have been trained on site. Kaya Mawa has also partnered with the Fisheries Department to guarantee sustainable fishing practices are upheld to ensure a future for the community for many years to come.
