The detail

"Study and conserve the wildlife that resides along 95 miles of breathtaking coastline between East Devon and Dorset."

The aptly named 'Jurassic Coast' contains rock that dates back an astonishing 185 million years, and is awash with all manner of animals and reptiles whose lineage stretches back to the ancient past! You will be working in close conjunction with the Amphibian and Reptile Conservation (ARC) on key lowland dry heathland reserves and helping the The Mammal Society to survey all manner of mammals. This project is genuinely an all-encompassing experience for anyone with a passion for wildlife conservation.

A key part of your conservation efforts will be surveying amphibians and reptiles that reside on the Arne Peninsula. Reptiles require certain temperature conditions to thrive, and you will ensure the structures they reside in allow them to avoid extreme hot or cold weather. You'll be studying a diverse range of animals, from sand lizards and smooth snakes to voles and shrews! Turning your attention to plants, you will remove invasive fauna to ensure the thriving of desirable vegetation. In your down-time relax on the beautiful beaches around the area, visit the new Astronomy Centre at Durlston and go to the deep-seated caves of Winspit where you'll have the chance to spot some bats!

Wild Days Conservation has long sought to utilise the collective effort of eco-conscious individuals to positively affect British wildlife. This involves gathering volunteers to spend their holidays improving Britain's most beautiful natural areas and protecting their inhabitants. Wild Days Conservation provide expert knowledge of conservation issues, allowing volunteers to develop a more profound understanding of the challenges presented by field conservation. All those who participate are guaranteed to get hands on with important conservation work, sight-see Britain's' most scenic locations, and enjoy comfortable accommodation and hearty meals.

The focus on this project will be habitat conservation for the wonderful variety of wildlife that resides along the Jurassic Coast, prioritising work on the nearby ARC Trust. You will be tasked with maintaining the habitats of various reptiles and amphibians to ensure they can survive and thrive in optimal conditions regardless of the unpredictable British weather! Your conservation duties will extend to mammals too, as you work with The Mammal Society, using survey techniques including camera trapping to document the quantity of small mammal species in the area. The data you contribute will help to create a new, long-needed, UK Mammal Atlas and inform the actions of local conservation groups.
