The detail

"Don’t simply explore nature, but truly immerse yourself within it on an educational tour of Guyana."

If you’re looking to make some memories, deviate from your standard beach break and instead explore untouched wilderness, then this education and exploration tour in Guyana is ideal for you. Not only is this South American country 85% forest, it is also home to the largest single-drop waterfall in the world. But this isn’t all waterfalls and rainbows, there are also plenty of exhilarating experiences, including walking along a bridge suspended an eye-watering 100 feet above ground...

You don’t have to be a monkey to experience the night-life of the jungle - spend one night in a hammock in the pristine rainforest, and learn more about Guyana's wildlife as you prowl around the forest in search of jaguars. You’ll also experience authentic Guyanese culture as you visit the locals of the Amerindian villages. Stay in stunning eco-lodges, surrounded by pristine rainforest, and feel as though you've become a temporary resident of Guyana as you engage with the local culture.

TREE is dedicated to conservation through the means of education and outreach, community development, and protected area funding. Their philosophy is not to hold back and stop enjoying travel and nature, but rather to travel more while actively work to conserve the environment by learning more about it. They aim to come up with innovative new ways to preserve the environment whilst still dedicating our lives to exploring the world’s natural wonders. To TREE it is important to connect with people from all over the world because to conserve an area you must learn about the community that call that environment home.

Getting involved with this experience will enable you to contribute to tropical rainforest conservation and help to protect the surrounding areas. TREE has set up a variety of conservation initiatives, including the establishment of the first and only jaguar preserve. With other initiatives like the mitigation of carbon emissions, coral restoration and river monitoring you can learn all about the gorgeous TREE sites whilst aiding the areas conservation.

Day 1

Enjoy an exhilarating view as you fly over dense forest before landing at the Cheddi Jagan airport in Georgetown. Take a moment to survey your surroundings before you explore the famous Stabroek Market and the tallest wooden building in the world, St. George’s Cathedral.

Day 2

Fly high as you travel to Kaiteur National Park. Gaze out across the 300-foot expanse of Potaro River as it plunges over the edge. This is the ideal time to capture a snapshot of the beautiful landscape from your position above a large rock. Later, return to Georgetown and immerse yourself in local culture at the rum shops, or sample some Guyanese vendor food.

Day 3-7

Arrive at Iwokrama International Centre for Conservation and Development (IIC), an ecolodge and research centre at the heart of the forest reserve. Get active and hike along the treetops, across Turtle Mountain to marvel at the panoramic views. Keep your eyes peeled for the inhabiting animals as you explore the jungle trails and participate in bird watching. You’ll even be able to marvel at the mighty Essequibo River. It’s not all wildlife though, you’ll also be learning about biodiversity, ecological connections and conservation strategies. If you’re feeling a bit stir crazy, then take a trip to the Rupunnuni Savanah and visit Amerindian villages or jump aboard on a boat trip down the Essequibo and spend the night at Apoteri village. Or if you want a more relaxing experience, then laze about in a hammock at the rustic riverside lodges.

Day 8

Head on down to Georgetown to explore the pristine, untouched creeks. This is the ideal time to enjoy a gorgeous sunset, before heading back to the city for a final night of Guyanese food as you discuss your life-changing experience.

Day 9

It’s your final day so bid farewell to your fellow explorers and conservation heroes and head home from Georgetown. Don’t be too down as you head home, you’ll have plenty of outstanding memories to reflect on during your flight home.
