The detail

"After a cruise down the Kinabatangan River, you get the chance to experience real interactions with both local communities and natural habitats!"

Share the holiday of a lifetime with your family, and make some truly lasting memories together as you contribute to a meaningful conservation project in stunning Borneo. This Family Borneo Wildlife Safari project offers you and your family the chance to immerse yourself in traditional village life, and to discover some of the most iconic species of the Bornean rainforest. This project aims to maintain and develop a particularly beautiful part of the jungle, where breathtaking scenery combines with exotic and rare species to create a uniquely important area of biodiversity known as The Corridor of Life.

For the most part of this project, you and your family will stay in a wildlife sanctuary in the village of Sukau, next to the mighty Kinabatangan River. You’ll spend most of your time interacting with the local Orang Sungai (‘people of the river’) villagers, joining them in their homes for mealtimes and assisting in various community projects. One of the activities you’ll get involved with will be habitat restoration; by planting trees and clearing areas of destroyed habitats you’ll help to reforest the biologically important Corridor of Life, which is home to wild orangutans, pygmy elephants and sun bears, to name but a few! At the end of your tour, you’ll visit the world-famous Sepilok Orangutan Rehabilitation Centre for the chance to see orangutans up-close. By this time, you’re sure to have a much greater appreciation of the importance of conservation efforts!

The 560 kilometre-long Kinabatangan River runs through Borneo’s tropical rainforests, floodplains and mangrove jungles, and is an epicentre of biodiversity. Volunteers on this project work near the river, in a biologically-rich area known as The Corridor of Life. In recent years, this area has been severely damaged by logging and deforestation, leading to the destruction of important habitats. The overall aim of this project is to maintain and develop this ‘high priority’ conservation area by reforesting destroyed habitats, helping to ensure that the area’s wildlife has a protected habitat in which to live.

Volunteers work together with local people to plant trees, clear invasive species, and tend to seedlings, helping to restore damaged habitats. The planting of trees in between these less forested sections creates ‘corridors of greenery’ that will ensure that species like pygmy elephants and orangutans can move through the jungle more easily; without such corridors, it becomes very difficult for animals to pass from one section of the riverbank to another without leaving themselves exposed and vulnerable. By working alongside the local community in a concerted and collaborative conservation effort, the project is able to ensure its long-term sustainability by ‘bridging the gap’ between the community and the natural environment.

Day 1

The Adventure Begins: Upon your arrival at Sandakan International Airport, you’ll be met by your project facilitator. Transfer to your accommodation in Sepilok – a longhouse-style building boasting wonderful views of the surrounding forest. Spend this first evening receiving a briefing from the project facilitator to better understand the project’s aims.

Day 2-5

Project Days: Transfer to the project site at Sukau, where you’ll have a health and safety briefing followed by an orientation tour of the village. In the afternoon, your volunteer activities begin, so be ready to get stuck in! You’ll spend your nights at a beautiful village-run B&B.

Day 6

Sukau – Speilok Orangutan Centre: Bid the local Orang Sungai people a fond farewell as you leave the project site and journey on to the Rainforest Discover Centre. Later, you’ll continue to the world-famous Sepilok Orangutan Rehabilitation Centre, where you can see orangutans up-close: a truly unforgettable experience and a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. Spend your final evening resting and relaxing in your comfortable hotel in Sandakan town.

Day 7
