The detail

"An informative and important conservation getaway in idyllic southern England."

As a volunteer on the Autumn on Powerstock Common project, you will be working alongside the Dorset Wildlife Trust at one of the most important reserves in the county. Spend four nights volunteering at the common, a site that boasts unique habitats and rare species of plants and animals throughout all four seasons. This is a reserve situated in the heart of the Dorset Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB) and is a jewel in the crown of this conservation haven. The project takes place in autumn, the season where the reserve bursts into life with fruit and fungi growing in abundance.

Although you may take time to admire this natural beauty, your visit will serve another purpose as you will be tasked with the undertaking the necessary practical conservation work that occurs at the site. Crucially, hands-on habitat management is required to preserve the delicate grasslands that support the common’s biodiversity. Additionally, you will take part in surveying and monitoring of small mammal populations as they are vital to the entire ecosystem. At the end of the day, you will retire back to your rustic barn conversion to put your feet up and get a good night’s sleep. It all makes for an unforgettable conservation experience!

The work undertaken at Powerstock Common is of high importance locally and nationally due to the delicate and complex nature of the habitats on the site and as a result, the maintenance of these habitats is ultimately challenging. As many of the species that live on the reserve have specific habitat requirements, close attention needs to be paid to balancing the growth of certain vegetation in order to optimise living conditions. Notably, it is the wet/dry grassland and scrub areas of the reserve that require the most maintenance as these habitats are not only scarce across the UK but are also vital in supporting a number of different unique species of flora and fauna.

As a volunteer, your work is at the forefront of habitat management as you will be participating in removing invasive vegetation in order to prevent the succession of woodland into open grassland. As a result, the area created provides optimal conditions for various species of insects such as butterflies and moths. By managing a network of ponds alongside the grassland areas, it provides ideal habitat for other wildlife such as bats, frogs and newts – a conservation strategy aiming to benefit the local biodiversity as a whole.
