"Make a difference to the amazon, which makes a difference to the world. Leave a positive impact through flora and fauna knowledge and action!"

Every human being has an impact on the world in one way or another – be the one to leave a positive legacy. Based on the fringes of the intensely biodiverse Manú Biosphere Reserve, the Amazon Conservation Project is a stepping stone into the world of conservation for all aspiring environmentalists. With a variety of activities for you to expand your skills and knowledge of wildlife, you will find this adventure to be wildly inspiring.

Volunteers will work on a rotational basis on different activities. You could be allocated night shifts on amphibian and reptile watch, where you will carry out transect surveys along a 100 metre jungle trail. If you have always been fascinated by bird species, you could become part of the avian monitoring team, or you could get involved in reforestation, and help create, plant and map plots to expand the forest. With so much to offer, the Amazon Conservation Project Peru is a great opportunity for those who desire to experience the natural beauty of the Amazon rainforest, and to leave an everlasting positive print on the planet.

The Amazon Conservation Project Peru is focused on maintaining and protecting the Amazon forest and all the species within it, to keep its ecosystems healthy and flourishing. The habitats of the Manu Biosphere Reserve, where the project takes place, offer such versatility and are very sensitive, and so caring for the park has become a huge priority for the government. Eco-friendly initiatives vary from tracking animals to determine any changes in the environment or their behaviour (which could have ecologic impact), to reforestation, regeneration and bio-garden projects.

Volunteers on this project play an important part in maintaining the Manu Biosphere Reserve, which is also a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Volunteers contribute to the forest regeneration programme, helping to regulate the forest's health by monitoring its reserve of carbon and rebirth speed. This, paired with the bio-gardens project and the reforestation initiatives that increase the natural reserve of oxygen, allows the great Amazon jungle and the species within it to continue to flourish.

Day 1

The Adventure Begins: After arriving at the Alejandro Velasco Astete airport in Cusco, you will spend the day acclimatising to the altitude. Enjoy this free day to explore the city before the project briefing in the evening.

Day 2

Explore Cusco: Experience Andean culture first hand as you use this day to explore the city and grab your last minute essentials for the trip. Enjoy a good night's sleep before travelling into the jungle the following morning, where the real adventure will begin...

Day 3

Transfer to the Cloud Forest Lodge: Begin your trip to the Manu Biosphere over the Andes, where you will cross the cloud forest into the Amazon. When you arrive at the cloud forest, take the opportunity to learn about the local ecosystems and spot the national bird of Peru, the Cock of the Rock. You will spend one night in lodge accommodation before continuing your trip to the park, where the real work will begin.

Day 4

After a 3-hour journey and a stop at a cocoa plantation, you will finally arrive at the project site. Settle into your accommodation before heading into the jungle for a baptism of fire into Amazonian living.

Day 5-8

Training period: Learn more about the aims of the project, and about the sort of conservation tasks that you’ll be doing during your time here. You will also have a 3-day ‘crash course’ on how to live in the Amazon jungle safely. The learning will focus on native animal species and how to recognise them - it will be mainly field-based (there’s no substitute for experience!) but also includes some presentations.

Day 9

Final day of training: This will be your last day of training and you will get to work with some of the researchers on their conservation work.

Day 10-31

Project days: Depending on what smaller project you were assigned to, the tasks will vary during this period. Your working day will consist of morning and afternoon working sessions, including some breaks and lunch time and Sunday will be your day off to enjoy this slice of jungle paradise.

Day 32

Transfer back to Cusco: Unless you have an extended period of work at the project, today you will say goodbye to the wondrous jungle after breakfast and head to Cusco.

Day 33

Final day: After a month of hard work and contributing to an amazing project, it is time to leave Cusco behind. Check out before midday for a transfer to the airport, or extend your time in Peru with some independent travel!
