We have had an incredible year, from fairytale snow storms to intense heat. But finally it is drawing to an end. The days are getting shorter and summer clothes are being replaced by knitwear. We have an awful habit in the UK of hiding ourselves away in winter. Even nature lovers spend almost no time outside. The outside world in winter does admittedly seem far less appealing: grey, rain-shrouded cities. Instead of bird song, you only hear the hush of rain and cars whizzing past. It feels as though all the natural world has gone into hibernation and now only cities and inhospitable fields of mud exist beyond our four walls.
It’s not true…
If you dare venture from your house and head a little further afield you will quickly realise that winter can be an incredible time to explore the natural world. Europe holds some real treasures that highlight the best parts of the colder months…
Only an hour and a half from Geneva airport is a hotel that will transport you to another world. Switzerland’s Whitepod takes the igloo and transforms it into a luxurious escape. Enjoy the privately managed ski slopes or simply lie in bed and stare at the stars.
If you want a more traditional igloo, Switzerland also offers Iglu-Dorf. Stay at a cosy multi-bed ‘Standard Igloo’ or enjoy the paradoxical experience of sleeping in a heated snow-room at the ‘Hot Igloo’! Luxuriate in the privacy of your own ‘Island Igloo’ on Lake Hinterstocken, or appreciate the tastefully furnished ‘Romantic Igloo Suite’ which boasts its own music system and private Jacuzzi! With bars and restaurants to enjoy, this place is cool in every sense!
For those willing to brave the cold for a little adventure, our snowshoeing week in the French Alps in ideal! Explore fields of glittering untouched snow and magical icicle strung forests. The tour takes you through stunning National Parks and across some of the most beautiful landscapes in the country.
If you’re keen to see a little more of the wild side out in the Alps, you can even head out with a guide and follow in the footsteps of the Alps’ most iconic predator. Follow wolves, learn to spot their tracks and stay in a cozy winter refuge.
Of course, we can’t talk about the beauty of winter without mentioning one of the greatest spectacles on Earth: the Northern Lights. Head to Sweden for snow, ice, moose, frozen lakes, ancient boreal forests and the most incredible light show on Earth!
