The Albanian Alps Experience is a must for anyone who loves exploring the world on their own two feet; what better way to become truly immersed in nature than trekking through the spectacular wilderness of the Albanian Alps? Walking from one traditional guesthouse to the next, and finally to Montenegro itself, allows you to really connect to the environment around you, gaining first-hand knowledge of this wonderful landscape and its host of wildlife. You will also gain an instructive insight into rural life, and learn new skills, as you help the local people to milk cows, herd sheep and gather berries.
This tour also takes you to some of the most stunning locations in the world, such as the beautiful Lake Koman. Here, you can hop on the Lake Koman River Ferry and journey along the tranquil water, admiring the dramatic gorges and untouched beauty of this rural scene. Explore the Valbona Valley, nestled in the heart of Albania’s ‘Accursed Mountains’, which remains one of the most extraordinary, mysterious and untouched places in Europe. Far away from the humdrum of modern life, it is the perfect place to relax and enjoy nature at its most spectacular.
The Albanian Alps Experience is primarily concerned with being as connected to nature as possible. The local communities have an agreement with their governments not to build asphalt roads unless there is an absolute necessity, and therefore walking and horse riding remain the predominant means of transport. You will trek from one accommodation to the next, and finally to Montenegro itself, immersing yourself in the surrounding environment, as well as ensuring that carbon emissions are kept to a minimum. This experience will enable you to appreciate how invaluable this environment is, both for the various forms of flora and fauna which are present in this habitat, but also for the local communities who rely on the surrounding area to sustain their way of life.
This tour also makes certain that any additional activities, such as shepherding, milking cows or constructing haystacks are only available when the local community are performing them. This ensures that the daily routine of the local people is in no way disrupted while guests learn about life in Albania, and their sustainable approach to food production and transport. Guests will leave feeling inspired to live in a more sustainable way, and mindful of their relationship with the environment around them.
