"Discover the tranquil beauty of Devon from this cosy self-catering lodge."
Nuthatch Lodge, a cosy log cabin situated in the wonderful Devon countryside, is the perfect platform for a short break with the family. With a double bedroom and cross-over bunk room, the cottage sleeps four people in total. And you can even bring the dog! It boasts an appealing open-plan interior design, with plentiful seating, big south-facing windows, and a TV and DVD player, as well as a fully-equipped kitchen containing all the self-containing essentials you could wish for! By day, head out to explore Wheatland Farm's 21 wildlife-rich areas, and later return for a tasty BBQ in the meadow. The farm also has four ponds, the largest of which is complete with boats and a paddle board for you to use! As the sun begins to set, relax on the veranda and enjoy the grassland views - and keep your eyes peeled, as this is the perfect place to try and spot hunting barn owls...
You'll also want to explore the neighbouring area; sip delicious Devon cider at one of charming Winkleigh's characterful pubs, skim stones on the River Taw, and treat yourself to a traditional farmhouse cream tea. Further afield, several National Trust properties make for a great day-trip, including Finch Foundry, the last working water-powered forge in the UK, on the edge of Dartmoor. If you're feeling adventurous, explore part of Devon’s Tarka Trail, which winds its way through North Devon’s UNESCO Biosphere Reserve to the North Devon coast. Back at the lodge, enjoy a game of volleyball or badminton, or just kick back, relax, and enjoy the views.
The owners of the Nuthatch Lodge, Ian and Maggie, have decades of environmental experience under their belts. In their lives before Wheatland Farm, Ian won his first prize for sustainable tourism in the 1990s, while Maggie has worked as an ecologist, and also as a science communicator with the Natural Environment Research Council. Since then, the couple has turned Wheatland Farm's holiday accommodation 'green'. All your electricity is renewable, and most is generated onsite from an 11kw wind turbine. Hot water is solar (with immersion heater back up!) and Nuthatch Lodge is super-well-insulated. Wheatland Farm has won various sustainability awards, including the VisitEngland award for sustainable tourism in 2012 and 2015. The Farm also achieved gold level approval from the Green Tourism Scheme 2008-2016 and from the Devon Wildlife Trust.
As well as integrating eco-friendly features into their properties, Wheatland Farm also strives to promote local produce, educate people about wildlife and farming, and help people to access wildlife and connect with nature. Wheatland Farm proves that sustainability can be 'everyday', and that it's a lifestyle to be widely embraced. You don't have to be 'wacky' green to enjoy a holiday at Wheatland Farm - sustainability is just an added bonus to a comfortable and thoroughly enjoyable holiday surrounded by nature!
