And of course, Costa Rica is renowned for its stunning array of wildlife, so be sure to bring your binoculars…
In Costa Rica, sustainability is part of everyday life – and Hotel Tilajari is no exception to the rule! From reusing paper as stationary note cubes to maintaining nearby forest trails, the hotel has sustainability woven through its daily operations. In terms of ecological sustainability, the hotel strives to minimise its impact on the surrounding natural environment: it has achieved up to a 90% reduction in the use of chlorine and other chemical cleaning supplies, replacing these with biodegradable/organic products; oil from the hotel’s kitchen and local restaurants is used to produce biodiesel in a small plant; and there is currently a project in place that is improving the hotel’s wastewater management processes.
The hotel also works with the local community to help spread the socio-economic benefits of tourism. Hotel Tilajari has developed close links with various local social projects, including a children’s home, schools, and a rehabilitation centre, through providing sponsorships and donations. The on-site gift shop prioritises selling local crafts and products, with clear labelling to show the origin of each product allowing guests to make informed choices and support local artisans. Finally, the hotel aims to educate its guests about sustainable practices, and encourages them to enjoy cultural activities and integrate with local people so that both enjoy the positive impacts of tourism.
