12. The Great Gorilla Project, Uganda
The phrase ‘once-in-a-lifetime’ experience is often overused, but in this case it really does apply. There are sadly very few mountain gorillas remaining in the wild, and trekking permits to go and see them are hard to come by. On this volunteering project, you’ll raise awareness of the importance of gorilla conservation in local communities, as well as enjoy two memorable treks to observe them in the wild.

Ever heard of a malleefowl? I’ll help you out – it’s a cautious little bird, native to Australia, and it’s in need of protection! Travel to Victoria’s Western District to volunteer on this short conservation project in the Little Desert National Park.

10. Wildlife Rehabilitation Internship in Guatemala
If you have a little more time and have always had a passion for helping wildlife, then how about committing to a month-long internship in Guatemala? Stay at a rescue centre for between one week and six months, helping to care for and rehabilitate traumatised animals rescued from the illegal pet trade.

You’ll track and monitor the herds, as well as work with local communities to raise awareness about conservation. In your downtime, explore base camp, learn about Namibian culture, and socialise with your fellow volunteers!
7. Eco Beach Turtle Conservation, Australia
Australia is famed for its beautiful beaches, and this project gives you the chance to live and work on one of the best stretches of coastline the country has to offer. Staying at the Eco Beach Resort on ‘Kimberley Coast’, you’ll help protect vulnerable flatback turtles by conducting beach patrols, counting eggs, and gathering data on individual turtles.

6. The Great Elephant Project
Volunteer deep in the Sri Lankan jungle, helping to conserve majestic Asiatic elephants. Learn conservation skills, observe elephant behaviour from a tree hut, and work with local communities to develop strategies to avoid human-elephant conflict. 5. Rainforest Research and Conservation in Malaysia
There are only around 250-340 Malayan Tigers left in the wild – and this number is ever-decreasing. On this project, you’ll support local organisations working to protect these last remaining tigers, by going on ‘Educational, Conservation and Observation (ECO) Walks’ in the jungle, tracking tigers and keeping an eye out for tell-tale signs of poachers. You’ll also visit waterfalls, ancient limestone caves, and learn all about forest living from the indigenous Batek people.

1. Samboja Lestari Orangutan Volunteer Project, Malaysia
With their deep brown almond eyes, tufty orange fur, and gentle nature, orangutans hold a special place in many of our hearts. Over the last 50 years or so, the Bornean orangutan has lost over half of its rainforest home, leaving the species in grave danger. Make a difference as a volunteer on this project, helping out at Samboja Lestari, a safe area of rainforest home to some fantastic rescue and rehabilitation centres.
