Supporting Explorers against extinction
We’re supporting Explorers against extinction, find out why below.
Explorers against extinction is a cause close to the heart of everyone at Eco Companion. We’re super conscious in the world of eco travel about animal extinction. Extinction, put simply is to have no living members, the species no longer exists. The likes of the Dodo and Western Black Rhino have been confirmed as extinct, whilst many animals such as the Bornean Orangutan and Amur Leopard aren’t far away. Some amazing efforts are being made to counteract this, such as Explorers against Extinction’s Sketch for Survival project. I went along to find out more.
Explorers against Extinction is a unique event running with support from The Real AfricaTrust. They gain support from some of the world’s most famous explorers such as Sir Ranulph Fiennes (below) and Colonel John Blashford-Snell in their fight to stop animal extinctions.
Sketch for Survival is a really simple idea. Explorers against Extinction asked artists, explorers, adventurers and celebrities to do a 15 minute Sketch to raise awareness and raise funds to combat the, unfortunately, ever increasing wildlife crime rate. Why 15 minutes? Sadly every 15 minutes an Elephant is killed in Africa. At EcoCompanion we love the idea and we strongly believe this shocking statistic shouldn’t go unnoticed.
When I met Sara, who’s running the exhibition, her passion for the project was infectious. She’s got a clear target to hit and was totally committed to the project and doing something about the reasons why it’s so vitally needed. A huge amount of effort has gone into planning the show piece evening at the Royal Geographical Society with special guests, be sure to check it out here. Sara and I discussed in detail the impact of Rhino extinction in Botswana. It’s an alarming statistic that rhinos are being killed faster than they can reproduce. This is a fast track to extinction as we not so slowly but surely wipe them from the face of the earth.
We can’t ignore this and it’s thanks to people like Sara and the high profile supporters of Explorers against extinction that this message finally has a voice that carries. . Levison Wood (Lion sketch below)for example has 50,000+ following on Twitter and the impact that his involvement has with such an organisation is vital to spread this message as far as possible.
At Eco Companion we’re passionate about sustaining wildlife in their natural habitat without the threat of extinction looming large on the horizon. Explorers against Extinction are an amazing example of a group of people passionate about preserving endangered species and the Sketch for Survival is a great example of the proactive steps they are taking to to make a difference.
If you’re passionate about this issue and want to do more then take a look at some of our most popular conservation projects with Elephants.
