MTV Gibraltar Calling – Music and Macaques
A weekend trip to Gibraltar this September sees some of the best live music around, the ideal way to wrap up the summer and the festival calendar. MTV will host the annual music festival, MTV Gibraltar Calling, for the first year, and it promises to be one to remember. It’s also the perfect chance to see the resident Barbary macaques in action, the only wild monkey population in the European continent.
Where and when is the festival held?
MTV Gibraltar Calling Music Festival is held over the weekend of the 2nd and 3rd of September. The festival itself – an annual event – is held at the Victoria Stadium, a quick stroll from passport control and across the airstrip if you’re walking across from Spain. You might choose to fly directly to Gibraltar, the plane will land within spitting distance of the main stage! Tickets should be bought in advance and are available here.
There’s a long list of bands and solo performers, with more still to be announced. A taster of names include:
- ● Bastille
- ● Clean Bandit
- ● Charlie XCX
- ● Craig David
- ● Fatboy Slim
- ● Jonas Blue
- ● The Kaiser Chiefs
- ● Tinie Tempah
- ● The Vaccines
Also, just announced, news of an after party DJ set on both nights, hosted by Steve Aoki & Fatboy Slim. There’s also an ‘after the after party’ with Pixie Geldof, and expect some laughs with her co-host Scotty T from Geordie Shore.
During the morning, before the festival kicks off, take the chance to explore the habitat of the Barbary Apes or macaques, who are the most famous residents of the Rock. They’re a species of tailless monkey, otherwise only found in Algeria, or Morocco, which, incidentally. you’ll also get a good view of from Gibraltar. You’ll get to observe them up close and personal, but, cute as they are, they’re also playful! If you’re wearing a hat you won’t have it for long, ditto sunglasses. So hold your valuables tightly. Don’t attempt to feed them, or demonstrate threatening behaviour, they will bite. After all, you’re a visitor in their territory.
If you love your visit, you might fancy another taste of Ape life. How about a Great Ape Adventure holiday in Uganda?
You’ll head to east Africa, where trekking, and a rare opportunity to observe these great creatures at their ease and in a natural setting is all part of the fun. Bwindi’s National Park is a fantastic place to explore, hike and relax, with amazing landscapes and a taste of the local cuisine. An adventure holiday, and an awesome experience is guaranteed!
